1st Annual Ocracoke Red Drum Shootout
Ocracoke Island is set to host its inaugural Ocracoke Red Drum Shootout on September 21, 2024, promising an exciting day for anglers of all skill levels.
This catch-and-release fishing tournament, focusing on Red Drum, is organized by local residents and friends of Ocracoke and aims to become an annual tradition.
The event serves as a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the Ocracoke Working Watermen's Association, particularly for the preservation of the island’s last remaining fish house, the Ocracoke Seafood Company.
Tournament Structure
The competition will feature several entry levels, with the basic Level 1 entry priced at $150 if registered by August 30, increasing to $200 afterward. Additional competitive levels, such as the "Most Releases Calcutta" and the "Longest Drum Calcutta," offer participants the chance to win trophies and cash prizes. The top challenge, the "First Fifty Three," is awarded for the first Red Drum measuring 53 inches or longer, with substantial prize money on the line.
Event Schedule
9:00 AM: Onsite registration and packet pickup at Berkley Barn
11:30 AM: Fish fry lunch for participants
12:30 PM: Registration closes
1:00 PM: Captains' meeting
3:30 PM - 7:30 PM: Tournament fishing (lines in, lines out)
8:00 PM: Music at Berkley Barn
9:00 PM: Awards ceremony
10:00 PM: Event concludes
