OBX Things to Do for January 23nd 2025
Today in the Outer Banks, expect cloudy skies with cold temperatures. The high will be around 36°F (2°C), with a low dropping to 26°F (-3°C). A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7:00 AM EST, with lingering impacts from earlier snowfall.
While no additional precipitation is expected, roads, especially bridges and overpasses, may remain slick and hazardous. The Atlantic Ocean's water temperature is approximately 47°F (8°C), making it too cold for swimming but ideal for enjoying a peaceful beach walk or shoreline exploration.
National Pie Day: Celebrating a Delicious Tradition

Celebrating the Frisbee: From Pie Tins to Flying Discs
On January 23, 1957, Wham-O produced the first Frisbees, transforming a simple pastime into a cultural phenomenon. The concept originated from college students tossing empty pie tins from the Frisbie Pie Company, leading to the development of the plastic flying disc we know today. For those looking to enjoy a game of catch on the beach, here are some local shops where you can purchase a Frisbee:
Kitty Hawk Kites: With multiple locations across the Outer Banks, they offer a variety of outdoor toys, including Frisbees.
Island Revolution: Located in Nags Head, this shop carries beach toys and recreational gear.
Ocean Atlantic Rentals: Besides rentals, this store sells beach games and toys, including Frisbees.
Tips for Throwing a Frisbee:
Backhand Throw: Grip the disc with your thumb on top and fingers underneath. Swing your arm across your body and release with a flick of the wrist.
Forehand Throw: Place your index and middle fingers under the rim, thumb on top. Snap your wrist forward to release.
Hammer Throw: Hold the disc like a forehand, but throw it overhead for a high, arcing flight.
Honoring the 1992 U.S. Women's World Cup Team
Today marks the anniversary of the 1992 U.S. Women's World Cup team visiting the White House, celebrating their groundbreaking victory. This team laid the foundation for women’s soccer in the U.S., with players like Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly leading the way.
Eastern North Carolina has a rich history in women's soccer, particularly at the University of North Carolina (UNC). Under Coach Anson Dorrance, the UNC Tar Heels have won numerous NCAA championships, solidifying the state as a hub for soccer talent and inspiring generations of female athletes.
