OBX Things to Do for January 20th 2025
Today in the Outer Banks, expect mostly sunny and colder conditions, with a high of 36°F (2°C) and a low of 26°F (-3°C). A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 5:00 PM EST on Tuesday until 7:00 AM EST on Wednesday, with potential heavy snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches. Residents and visitors should prepare for slippery road conditions and monitor local weather updates.
Presidential Visits to the Outer Banks and Eastern North Carolina
On August 18, 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Roanoke Island to attend the 350th anniversary of Virginia Dare's birth and a performance of "The Lost Colony." This visit highlighted the historical significance of the area and brought national attention to the Outer Banks.
While President Roosevelt's visit is among the most notable, other presidents have also recognized the importance of Eastern North Carolina. For example, President John F. Kennedy visited military bases in the Norfolk area and Eastern North Carolina in April 1962 to observe naval operations. These visits underscore the region's historical and strategic importance.
Tips for Driving in Snow
With the anticipated winter storm, here are some essential tips for safe driving in snowy conditions:
Avoid Unnecessary Travel: If possible, stay off the roads during severe weather. If you must drive, inform someone of your route and expected arrival time.
Prepare Your Vehicle: Ensure your car is winter-ready by checking the battery, tires, and windshield wipers. Keep the gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up.
Drive Slowly: Reduce your speed to accommodate lower traction on snow or ice. Accelerate and decelerate gradually to maintain control.
Increase Following Distance: Extend the space between you and the vehicle ahead to at least five to six seconds to allow for adequate stopping distance.
Know Your Brakes: Apply firm, steady pressure on the pedal if you have anti-lock brakes; pump the brakes gently if not.
Keep an Emergency Kit: Carry essentials like a snow shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, blankets, and non-perishable food in case you become stranded.
