Today in Kill Devil Hills, NC, expect sunny and chilly conditions with a high of 44°F (6°C) and a low of 39°F (4°C).

National Hot Buttered Rum Day
January 17th marks National Hot Buttered Rum Day, celebrating a warm and comforting beverage with deep historical roots. Originating in colonial America, hot buttered rum became popular in the 1650s when molasses, a byproduct of sugar production, was imported to the American colonies and distilled into rum. This spirit was often mixed with hot water, spices, and butter to create the soothing drink we know today.
Rum's Connection to the Outer Banks
The Outer Banks has a storied history with rum, dating back to the days of piracy and maritime trade. The treacherous waters off the coast, known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," were frequented by pirates like Blackbeard, who often traded in rum.
In modern times, this connection is honored by local establishments such as Outer Banks Distilling, which opened in 2015 in Manteo, NC. They produce small-batch rums under the brand name Kill Devil Rum, paying homage to the region's rich maritime heritage.
