Things To Do On The Outer Banks For April 18, 2025
Welcome to your Outer Banks newsletter of April 18, 2025! Whether you’re a seasoned sand dune scrambler or a first-time beachcomber, the OBX is ready to deliver adventure, relaxation, and a few sandy surprises. Spring is in full swing, the wildflowers are popping, and the breezes are just brisk enough to make your kite soar. So, pack your sunglasses, leash up your pup, and let’s make the most of every salty, sun-kissed moment—no matter what the forecast says!
The weather this past week was classic Outer Banks spring: highs hovered around 64–70°F, with lows in the mid-50s, and the skies offered a mix of sunshine and a few clouds—perfect for layering up in the morning and peeling down by midday. The ocean water is still on the brisk side, averaging about 64°F, so only the bravest will be swimming, but it’s ideal for a walk along the shore or some shell hunting. Sunrise on April 18 was at 6:26 AM, with sunset at 7:38 PM, giving you over 14 hours of daylight to explore, play, and soak in those Outer Banks views.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park: First-Time Tips
If you’ve never been to Jockey’s Ridge, you’re in for a treat. It’s the tallest living sand dune system on the East Coast, and climbing to the top for the first time is a rite of passage. The views stretch from the Atlantic to the Roanoke Sound, and the ever-shifting sands make every visit unique. Here are a few tips for your first trip:
Wear shoes you can slip off easily—the sand can get hot, and going barefoot is half the fun.
Bring water and sunscreen; there’s little shade on the dunes.
The wind can be strong, so it’s a perfect spot to fly a kite (and you’ll see plenty in the sky).
If you’re bringing your dog, like I do, make sure to keep them leashed and bring a collapsible water bowl. My pup loves bounding up the dunes but needs plenty of breaks and water—those hills are no joke for short legs!
Sunset is magical at Jockey’s Ridge, with golden light and panoramic views—don’t forget your camera.
Whether you’re sliding down the dunes, chasing your dog across the sand, or just soaking in the views, Jockey’s Ridge is a must for every Outer Banks adventure.
