Jockey's Ridge 50th Anniversary Celebration

Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, North Carolina, is gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a series of events from June 5 to June 8, 2025. This milestone commemorates five decades since the park's establishment in 1975, honoring its rich history and the community's dedication to preserving this natural landmark.

Jockeys Ridge 50th Anniversary Event Schedule:

  • Thursday, June 5: The festivities will commence with a "Homecoming" event, welcoming back individuals who have contributed to the park's legacy over the years.

  • Friday, June 6: Attendees can look forward to educational hikes, live musical performances, the groundbreaking ceremony for an extension of the accessible boardwalk, and a captivating drone show illuminating the evening sky.

  • Saturday, June 7: The day's activities will include watersports on the Roanoke Sound, a kite demonstration showcasing vibrant displays, and a sunset ceremony featuring the national anthem and a sparkling toast. In a nod to the park's history, a North Carolina flag will be raised atop the dune, reminiscent of the original deed transfer to the state parks system.

  • Sunday, June 8: The celebration will conclude with sunrise yoga sessions on the dune, a disc golf tournament, horseshoe competitions, a sandcastle-building contest, and a community park cleanup, encouraging participants to give back to this cherished site.

These events are organized by the Friends of Jockey's Ridge State Park in collaboration with Park Superintendent Joy Cook. The committee is actively engaging community volunteers to ensure a memorable celebration that honors the park's significance and the efforts of those who have preserved it.

Jockey's Ridge stands as the tallest natural sand dune system in the eastern United States, offering visitors unique opportunities for hang gliding, kite flying, and hiking. The 50th-anniversary celebration aims to highlight both the natural beauty of the park and the community's role in its preservation.
