Highlights from the 46th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show

The Outer Banks has long been a beacon for artists, drawing inspiration from its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant community. The Frank Stick Memorial Art Show, now in its 46th year, stands as a testament to this thriving artistic spirit.

This year's exhibition, hosted by Dare Arts, showcased an eclectic array of talent that captivated art lovers and collectors alike.

The 46th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show, hosted by Dare Arts, spotlighted the vibrant and diverse talent of over 80 local and regional artists, making it a significant event in the Outer Banks' cultural calendar.

This year, the exhibition was open from February 2 through February 24, 2024, at the Dare Arts Gallery in Manteo, North Carolina. The show is named in honor of Frank Stick, a notable preservationist and artist who played a pivotal role in establishing the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

This year's show was judged by Eric Burris, an experienced metalsmith and educator, who brought his unique perspective to the selection process. The Best In Show award was bestowed upon Cathy Spivey Mendola for her piece "Rust Never Sleeps," a detailed work that combines eco-printed fabrics with intricate hand stitching, showcasing the potential for textile art to stand out in a gallery setting. Mendola expressed her joy and surprise at receiving the award, highlighting the organic and intuitive process behind her creation.

Additional awards included Excellence Awards, Honorable Mentions, and a People's Choice Award, which was determined by votes from over 75 attendees at the opening reception. The range of materials and subject matters presented in the awarded pieces underscored the diverse talent and innovative spirit of the artists involved.

The exhibition served not only as a platform for artists to showcase their work but also as a community event that brought together art lovers, providing them with an opportunity to engage with the arts in a meaningful way. The Frank Stick Memorial Art Show continues to be a cornerstone event for Dare Arts, emphasizing the organization's commitment to nurturing and promoting the arts within Dare County.
