Experience the Harvest Moon: Full Moon Climb at Bodie Island Lighthouse on September 17, 2024
The Bodie Island Lighthouse, a cherished landmark of the Outer Banks, offers a truly unique experience with its Full Moon Climbs.
On September 17, 2024, visitors will have the opportunity to ascend the historic lighthouse under the glow of the Harvest Moon.
This event is part of a series of special climbs held throughout the summer and early fall, allowing participants to experience the lighthouse in a way few others do.
Event Details
The Full Moon Climb on September 17 will offer four timed climbs starting at 7:00 PM, with subsequent climbs at 7:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 8:30 PM. Each tour allows only eight participants, ensuring an intimate and peaceful experience.
Climbers will ascend the 219 spiral steps to reach the lighthouse balcony, where they can take in breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, bathed in the soft, ethereal light of the full moon.
Tickets for the climb are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children aged 15 and under. It's important to note that tickets are only available for purchase on the day of the event, starting at 7:00 AM, and they tend to sell out quickly due to the limited number of participants per climb.
What to Expect
Participants should prepare for a moderately challenging climb. The lighthouse interior is narrow, with no air conditioning or lighting, so it is recommended to bring a flashlight.
The ascent is roughly equivalent to climbing a 10-story building, so those with health conditions should consider their ability to complete the climb.
The experience, however, is well worth the effort, offering an unparalleled view of the moonlit Atlantic coast from the lighthouse balcony.
Children must be at least 42 inches tall to participate, and all participants should arrive at least five minutes before their scheduled climb. Additionally, proper footwear is required, and bulky items like backpacks should be left in the car.
This event is a rare opportunity to connect with the history and natural beauty of the Outer Banks in a serene and awe-inspiring setting. Whether you’re a local or visiting the area, the Full Moon Climb at Bodie Island Lighthouse promises to be a highlight of your evening.
