40th Anniversary Open House at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

Join the 40th Anniversary Open House at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, November 16, 2024, for a day of exploration, wildlife tours, and family-friendly activities.

This milestone event celebrates four decades of the refuge’s dedication to conservation, habitat protection, and environmental education, offering visitors an in-depth look at one of North Carolina’s premier wildlife areas.

This open house event welcomes all ages and is free to attend. Activities will include guided tours, educational stations, wildlife presentations, and interactive games designed to engage participants of all ages in the importance of wildlife conservation.

Highlights of the Day

  • Guided Tram Tours: Take a scenic tram tour through the refuge to observe its unique ecosystems and wildlife. Two tram tours will be available at 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Tours are free but require prior registration.

  • Meet the Refuge Manager: Enjoy an opportunity to meet the refuge manager at special sessions scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., where you’ll hear insights about the refuge's management and conservation efforts.

  • Educational Exhibits and Hands-On Activities: Learn about the diverse wildlife, including red wolves, black bears, and migratory birds. Interactive stations will help visitors understand the refuge’s impact on protecting endangered species and preserving local ecosystems.

  • Family Fun and Games: The event will include nature-inspired games for children and families, making it a fun and educational experience for all.

Additional Information

Registration: While general admission is free, certain activities (like tram tours and the manager meet-and-greet) require advance registration, which opened on October 18. Early sign-up is recommended due to limited space.

Directions and Parking

The Refuge Operations Center is located in East Lake, about a 20-minute drive from Manteo. Ample parking will be available on-site.
